What Makes a Blog Attractive? Part Three on How to Set Up a Blog

Welcome to Part Three in our series on How to Set Up a Blog written by Dana Newbrough, our Web/Blogmaster (and my sister). We hope you've enjoyed this series. If you missed Part One or Part Two, please check them out.

What makes a blog attractive?

It is not specific. Everyone has their own viewpoints on what is or is not attractive, but trust me–put some work into your blog or website! The saying “you cannot judge a book by its cover” is idealistic, but unrealistic. People all the time pick up books based on their cover, a dress based on how it looks on the rack, and will make assessments of people based on how they present themselves. So, assume they will do the same for your site.

Make it pretty, make it dark, make it modern or artistic… but whatever it is, it should clearly represent what you are talking about, what you are selling, or your viewpoint on a particular issue.

A generic default template may be easy and your information/product may be great, but we live in a very visual fast paced society. You might think your “product” is truly special, but there are a lot of blogs/websites out there. Make your blog or website visually stimulating and informative.
According to the PC Informant and The Royal Pingdom there were 255 million websites posted as of December 2010, that is a lot of competition! You want to grab your viewers quick and keep them before they move on!
If you make these goals for your website, then you will have a website/blog that people will check regularly, bookmark, and share with friends.  Remember, have fun and never lose sight of yourself and your product. Your authenticity will shine and your readers will appreciate it and come back again and again.

Thanks, Dana!

We'd love to know... what turns you off a blog, especially visually?

Black background and white text definitely turns me off. It's hard to read. But some of my favorite blogs look like this, so I suffer through it. Your blog layout is very nice, by the way!

I agree, Ananalise, and thanks for your compliment.

My biggest pet peeve is when I can't leave a comment. Sometimes it's a computer issue, but sometimes it's something the blogger can fix.

Small fonts turn me off the most - please have pity on your readers over 40, folks...but so do strange color combinations that hurt the eye. I am using a generic template, by the way, but hope to upgrade one day.

Alana, I agree. A little trick for you, if you are a PC user... hit Ctrl plus the + sign and the screen shot will get bigger. Sadly, I've been doing this more and more. ;-)

Love the support. Thanks for stopping by!

I agree with all that everyone has said. I'm still not entirely happy with my blog, but haven't yet found a template that works just right for me (I periodically shop around). It should be easy to read, easy to subscribe to, and easy to comment on.

Love this topic! I just purchased a package from a web designer because I can't find anything I'm really happy with out there. I'm trying to take in every tip I can find so that my blog is the the best EVER!!!!! (Okay that was a bit dramatic and way unrealistic, but you know what I mean.) ;)

Lisa

P.S. I'm not a big fan of the blogs that have like a bunch of posts featured on their page in little windows. It's so hard to explain, but normally they have a list with popular pots and another list or 2 and often find it really hard to figure out what the bloggers most recent post is. It's not obvious and it drives me nuts!

Nadine & Lisa, Great points. User-friendly is one of the most important aspects of a blog. If it's too difficult, especially since most of us have limited time to peruse our fave blogs, I move on to the next.

Thanks for visiting and commenting!

Busy backgrounds and too much "stuff" can be distracting and sometimes confusing.

I agree about busy backgrounds... my poor eyes can only handle so much. ;-)

I like blogs that are easy to navigate. I want to be able to follow you, like your facebook, and find you on twitter with ease.

Jessica, I agree. If I have to scroll up and down looking for something, I'll give up. Time is too precious. But, it's sad.
