Fear of Boring: #IWSG

It's the first Wednesday of the month and time for my Insecure Writer's Support Group post. A huge thanks to Alex J. Cavanaugh for putting together this group. I appreciate the opportunity to share my insecurities on the #IWSG therapy couch and to read how others are doing.

Next week, I will take part in my first blog tour. I can't wait to get the word out about Chasing Memories, but I'm also afraid. No, not about a poor review. Not that I want one. But I know that not everyone will love my book. One of my favorite quotes, from Bill Cosby: I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody.

But what does have me shaking in my boots... whether people will find me interesting. In addition to reviews, the blog tour will include guest posts and interviews. Will people want to buy a book from someone whose best answer to...

What do you do in your spare time?

is...

Read and hang out with my family.

???

EEK!

I wanted to put skydiving or mountain climbing. But I don't do those things. I'd love to describe all my tattoos, but I don't have any. Oh wait, I could discuss how I refinish old furniture and ride a motorcycle. Except those exist only in my imagination.

In the end, we have to be who we are. But, I sure wish I had an ace up my sleeve.

Please tell me I'm not the only one who worries about this.

I'm out of the country this week, but I look forward to catching up with all my #IWSG friends when I get back on Friday. Thanks for visiting!

Oh, and my blog tour begins Monday, August 12 with Tribute Books.

Please visit some stops on the tour and lie to me tell me I'm entertaining at least.

I think everyone worries about this but the next step is the one that makes the difference. I always think I'm writing a story for all my friends, a story they would love, one that will make the laugh and cry. I know my friends and I'm sure my story will connect with them. I understand not everyone is going to be my friend, those folks might call me boring. Whatev.

I, too, am incredibly boring. I actually had to answer this question last night at a foster-parenting class: What are the five groups of people you love most?

I had three.

Talk about feeling inadequate and boring.

Hello from IWSG!

You are not the only one who worries about things like that. I'm a terrible homebody and every Monday at work my coworkers ask, "What'd you do this weekend?" and I'm like, "Nothing. Why?"

I don't think your answers have to be boring, it's just all in how you word it.

Instead of "reading and hanging out with my family" say something like, "Getting so caught up in novels that I forget to sleep. Also sharing laughter, dirty jokes and Netflix movies with my family".

What do you DO with your family? That's the interesting part. I mean if you ask a NASCAR driver what he does for a career he could say, "I drive" or he could say, "I race at upwards of 200mph taking my life in my hands just so I can turn left a lot". I don't know anything about NASCAR but you get my point I'm sure.

You are gonna be great. Just focus on the details not the generalizations.

Your answer to that question is probably the same as most of us. Lol! I can't wait to follow along on your blog tour. Hope you're having a good time out of the country!

You're definitely not the only one, Tia! I was in a blogging workshop, talking about finding those readers who share our interests. I asked how would I find the boring people.

Hobbies? Reading, grammar, rare books, the history of words and ideas--um, yep, folks flocking to that!

But you know what, Tia--many will be interested in your insight into people's actions and intentions, and how you express those insights. So celebrate that gimlet inner eye of yours!
